Abdul Latif Bhuiyan (45), the prime accused in a high-profile murder case, was hacked and beaten to death by an angry mob in Manik Kandi village of Titas Upazila, Cumilla, on Monday night (May 11). Latif was a key suspect in the December 2022 killing of local Jubo League leader Zahirul Islam Molla.
According to police and local sources, Latif had returned to the locality only three days ago after being released on bail following five months in custody. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM when Latif allegedly attempted to open fire on rivals using a foreign pistol. Local residents chased and caught him, leading to a violent confrontation where he was severely beaten and hacked with sharp weapons.
Upon receiving the news via the 999 emergency service, Titas Police rescued Latif in critical condition. He was first rushed to the Titas Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Dhaka for advanced treatment. He succumbed to his injuries around 1:45 AM while being transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police confirmed the recovery of a foreign pistol and two rounds of ammunition from the possession of the deceased.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Titas Police Station, Md. Momirul Haque, stated that police units are working on the ground to identify those involved in the lynching. Additional police forces have been deployed in Manik Kandi village to maintain law and order. The body has been sent to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College in Dhaka for an autopsy.
