Habiganj :: The Sutang River in Habiganj, once a lifeline for the Haor region, is now facing an environmental catastrophe. Recent studies by Habiganj Agricultural University (HAU) reveal a disturbing reality: the river’s fish and water are heavily contaminated with microplastics and toxic heavy metals.
The Alarming Discovery
Researchers analyzed 30 fish from the Sutang River and identified 51 microplastic particles in their digestive tracts, averaging nearly two particles per fish. The study also found that larger fish carry a higher concentration of pollutants. Water samples showed between 6 to 46 microplastic particles per liter, consisting of harmful polymers like Polyethylene and Polyamide, primarily sourced from industrial waste.
Water Quality at its Lowest
The chemical analysis of the river indicates dangerously high levels of iron, manganese, and lead. Low dissolved oxygen levels and high total dissolved solids (TDS) have led experts to categorize the water as “Very Poor” on the Water Quality Index. Industrial effluents from nearby factories and unplanned urbanization are cited as the primary drivers of this degradation.
Health Hazards for Locals
The pollution has made life miserable for residents in areas like Bhadgari and Sadhur Bazar. Locals report skin irritations and rashes after coming into contact with the water. Furthermore, experts warn that using this contaminated water for irrigation allows heavy metals to enter the human food chain through crops like rice, posing long-term risks of cancer and neurological disorders.
The Path to Recovery
Environmentalists and researchers are calling for immediate intervention. Key recommendations include:
Enforcing the mandatory use of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) in all industrial units.
Implementing efficient plastic waste management systems.
Continuous scientific monitoring of the river’s health.
Raising awareness among the riverside communities to protect the ecosystem
