Gang of 6 Involved in Electric Transformer Theft Arrested in Habiganj

In a successful anti-crime operation, Habiganj police have apprehended six active members of a gang involved in the theft of electric transformers. Large quantities of stolen copper wire and transformer components were recovered during the drive.
According to police sources, the operation was conducted on March 26, 2026, under the direct supervision of Habiganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Tarek Mahmud and Additional Superintendent of Police (Madhabpur Circle) A.K.M. Salimul Haque.
Operation and Arrests
A specialized team from Chunarughat Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shafiqul Islam, Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Al Amin Mir, and Sub-Inspector Md. Sumon Miah, utilized advanced information technology to track the suspects. Initially, the team conducted a raid in the Habiganj Sadar area, arresting two core members of the gang: Md. Zahir Hossain (25) and Md. Zakir Hossain (28).
Based on the information provided by the initial detainees, a second special raid was conducted in the Madhabpur area, leading to the arrest of four additional members: Md. Sohel Miah alias Rahmat Ali (46), Md. Nahid Miah (24), Md. Kalu Miah (40), and Md. Sohag Miah (33). All arrested individuals are residents of the Madhabpur Municipality area.
Recovery of Stolen Goods
Police recovered the stolen items from a scrap shop owned by suspect Sohag Miah. The recovered materials include:
22 kg of copper wire.
10.4 kg of copper plates.
46.9 kg of transformer iron scraps.
The total estimated market value of the recovered goods is approximately BDT 83,760.
Legal Proceedings
The operation was carried out in connection with a case filed at Chunarughat Police Station (Case No. 27, dated March 28, 2026, under sections 457/380 of the Penal Code). Police noted that the arrested individuals have multiple prior cases of theft and robbery registered against them in various police stations. Further legal actions against the gang are currently underway.
